COUNCILMAN DAVE KURKOWSKI RECEIVES MORE VOTES IN PRIMARY THAN INCUMBENT LOBIONDO Cape May, NJ - The second district is in play. Democratic Congressional challenger Dave Kurkowski received 59 more votes in his primary than Representative Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ2) in the GOP primary held last Tuesday June 3rd. Kurkowski, a Cape May City Councilman and businessman, became the first challenger in at least 10 years to receive more votes than LoBiondo in the primary, which LoBiondo won handily in his last five challenges. Dave Kurkowski took the majority of counties, beating LoBiondo in five of the seven counties that comprise the district. "While these were two separate primaries, this is obviously a preview of things to come," said Kurkowski. "The fact that we were able to pull so many votes away from him while running a bootstraps campaign, with enthusiasm as its best resource, demonstrates that there are plenty of people out there looking for change here in South Jersey." This year's results stand in stark contrast to previous years. In 2002 the combined voter turnout was similar to this year's primary, but the result was drastically different. In 2002, 34,517 voters went to the polls, and LoBiondo received 73% of the total vote. This year, the number of voters was about the same (33,463), but only 46.9% cast their ballots for LoBiondo. This result comes over two months after the Presidential primaries spurred a switch in the majority of registered voters at an overwhelming two-thirds percentage, with tens of thousands of voters involved. The momentum has shifted. |
